While Angelina Jolie lip-syncs with María Callas’ original recordings throughout the film, her mouth movements are out of sync with the audio. I agree with blanche-2 and the other reviewers as a former opera student for many years and a friend and connoisseur of opera. This may be a delight for those who like Angelina Jolie and want to see a beautiful face on screen, but nothing here resembles the unique quality of the divine Maria. First of all, this is the worst lip-syncing I have ever seen in a biopic of the singer in my life, and it was a surprise that the film, which was supposed to be a first-rate production, went ahead regardless of this major failure. Singing is, after all, the heart of the film, not a secondary scene. And if you want to recreate Callas’s life with real recordings, the performative work must be flawless. Of course, it is as difficult as it is demanding, but if you want to compare Jolie’s performance, which is a remarkable, well-executed example, watch La Mome, the biopic of Edith Piaf, and enjoy Marion Cotillard; a perfect, incredibly good execution. (Jolie’s lack of synchronization is equally incredible.) Then there is the physique du role. Jolie is one of the most beautiful actresses of our time. But there are physical differences from Callas that cannot be solved with makeup, and the lack of resemblance ruins the effort. Callas’s beauty was tempered, life-giving, acquired, the result of a deep self-awareness and self-hardening effort to reshape her destiny. Such a subjective process was only “seen” in her regal bearing and her impressive natural presence. Jolie is a natural beauty, her gift of beauty given from the start, and I think she failed to convey the dramatic depth of Callas’s appeal enough to create the magical impression that we see a believable Callas. Even for those who love opera, Jolie’s embouchure (the “mouth mold” of a singer) is a joke, nowhere near the flawless playing of the canto mouth frame that opera singers (and Callas) clearly use. It may seem like a minor detail, but the sum of the inconsistencies and the lack of attention to detail is ultimately annoying. I haven’t listed the other observations that reviewers have already made that I agree with, which relate to the use of musical notes, plot, and realism. . I really wanted to like the film, but it was a complete disappointment for me.
