Based on the novel “Earth Abides” by George R
Narrative
After months of isolation, Isherwood “Ish” Williams discovers that much of the world has fallen to a mysterious disease. Yet despite his instinct to isolate, Ish leads the charge to develop a new civilization.
The novel was written in the late 1940s, after the end of World War II
Stewart. Featured on Korman Productions’ Deep Dive TV podcast: Earth Abides on MGM+ Deep Dive Episode 1 “Alone” with Dave and Stacie (2024).
The version on my shelf has a copyright of 1947, but Wikipedia lists it as 1949
The impact of the story is that 80 years ago, someone wrote about a global pandemic and its ultimate impact on people. Ish represents the reader, someone who didn’t have to watch people die, watch the news, feel the despair and defeat.
This has a lot to do with Ozymandias’ poetry
Those he meets represent the ways in which people might cope with these enormous losses. The fragility of man and the bravado of humanity in its successes.

I look forward to the remaining episodes and am rereading the novel once again. “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
