Divine G, who was not convicted while incarcerated at Sing Sing, finds purpose by performing with other incarcerated men in a theater group in this story about perseverance, humanity, and the transformative power of art. The film features the cast trying out different parts of the play. The group has been criticized for not doing comedy, their previous play was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is a comedy.

Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris/ Colman Domingo/ Jose Medeles (2024). While this new independent film, distributed by A24, is set in a New York prison, it’s less of a “prison movie” in the traditional sense, and more of an emotionally powerful and inspiring drama about how art—especially theater—can rehabilitate people in need of rehabilitation. The film portrays this issue in a sincere and heartfelt way, and it forms the cornerstone of an overall compelling story.
The film takes a while to really get going, but it remains engaging and captivating
Colman Domingo plays the main character, who is incarcerated but helps lead the prison theater group. Domingo’s performance is a great, understated display of emotion in a way that has a strong impact on the viewer while also radiating deep compassion. The supporting cast is also excellent, and many of the supporting characters have been incarcerated before.
I highly recommend it
The incorporation of the theater program into the narrative creates comic relief, but also pathos and a strong bond between the inmates and the program director. "Sing Sing" It’s not perfect, as the character development of the supporting characters could have been improved, but its beating heart and thoughtful, humane tone are truly moving and memorable. 8/10.
